NEW YORK -- Logan Verrett will need to be the stopper for the New York Mets on Wednesday afternoon.
Verrett, filling in for Jacob deGrom, gets the 1:10 p.m. ET series finale against the Miami Marlins at Citi Field as the Mets (2-5) attempt to avoid getting swept. He opposes left-hander Adam Conley.
Conley will become the first left-handed starting pitcher the Mets have faced this season. That means Juan Lagares should be in the outfield at the expense of Michael Conforto, and Wilmer Flores should get a start in the infield.
A lineup shakeup might be in order anyway. The Mets have mustered only six runs and 20 hits during their current four-game losing streak.
WEDNESDAY'S NEWS REPORTS:
Dee Gordon capped a 16-pitch at-bat -- the longest in the majors in nearly two years -- with an eighth-inning single to center against Jim Henderson. Gordon ultimately scored the tiebreaking run on Martin Prado's sacrifice fly as the Marlins beat the Mets, 2-1, Tuesday. Noah Syndergaard struck out 12 in seven dazzling innings, but came away with a no-decision. Syndergaard's 21 strikeouts this season are tied with Pedro Martinez (2005) and Dwight Gooden (1991) for the most through two outings to start a season in franchise history. Syndergaard induced 26 swings and misses on Tuesday -- the most by a Mets pitcher in the past 15 years. "My gosh almighty, the guy was tremendous tonight," Terry Collins said. The Mets had chances to score. David Wright flied out against Jose Fernandez to strand the bases loaded in the second. And Conforto grounded into an inning-ending double play against left-hander Craig Breslow with runners on the corners in the sixth. "He smoked it," Collins said. "He just hit it right at the second baseman." Fernandez retired the final 10 batters he faced, but was removed after five innings with his pitch count at 90. Curtis Granderson snapped an 0-for-20 drought with a first-inning double. Read game recaps in the Post, Daily News, Times, Newsday, Record and at NJ.com and MLB.com.
DeGrom's wife gave birth to the couple's first child, son Jaxon Anthony deGrom, on Monday at 9:23 p.m. ET. He weighed seven pounds, 12 ounces. Degrom remains on the active roster, although the disabled list is not being ruled out if the lat issue persists.
Eric Campbell was demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas after Tuesday's game to clear a roster spot for Rafael Montero, who will serve as bullpen insurance with the relief corps still reeling from Monday's five-out appearance by Steven Matz. The Mets particularly need a safety net since it is unclear what Verrett will contribute. The Mets temporarily will play with a four-man bench. Campbell had been 0-for-3 with two strikeouts this season.
Luis Mateo surrendered an RBI double to Stephen Perez in the 11th and Binghamton lost to Harrisburg, 4-3. Casey Delgado tossed six scoreless innings in his Florida State League debut and Amed Rosario tripled and scored the lone run in St. Lucie's 1-0 win against Dunedin. Columbia swept a doubleheader from Rome. Tyler Badamo allowed one run in six innings in a 3-1 win in Game 1. Joe Tuschak had a tiebreaking RBI single in a 3-2 win in the nightcap. Zack Wheeler underwent surgery Tuesday to remove a stitch in his right forearm that had not dissolved from his original Tommy John procedure. It is not expected to delay his targeted July 1 return to the majors.
