Butler holds on to beat Wittenberg 22-16
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Sam Schrader compiled 115 total yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Butler to a 22-16 win over Wittenberg on Saturday night in both teams' season opener.
After Wittenberg took a 3-2 lead early in the third quarter, Schrader answered on the first play of the ensuing possession with a 63-yard touchdown catch from Matt Shiltz. The freshman ran for another score before Shiltz threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Derek O'Connor with 2:37 left in the third period that gave the Bulldogs a 22-3 lead.
Wittenberg's Zack Jenkins threw a pair touchdown passes to Zach Culvahouse early in the final quarter, but could not score again to take the lead.
Jenkins threw for 363 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Culvahouse's 14 receptions broke a school record, and he had 130 receiving yards. Corey Stump caught 10 passes for 168 yards.
