Northwestern starting center Jackson Carsello was transported to a local hospital after sustaining a neck injury in the third quarter of Saturday's 34-18 win over South Dakota State.
Carsello's head was struck by another player's leg while he was blocking on a run play, and he remained on the field for several minutes. Medical personnel removed his shoulder pads and moved him onto a backboard as a precaution. He gave a thumbs-up as he was stretchered off the field, and he had movement in his extremities, a Northwestern spokesperson told ESPN.
"Nothing to report right now, but I know he was in good spirits," Northwestern coach David Braun said afterward.
The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Carsello received a court injunction in June that gave him an extra year of eligibility. He started the past two seasons and sued the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility after redshirting in 2022 and practicing with the team in 2021 but not being deemed healthy enough to play.
