Rutgers will start junior quarterback AJ Surace on Friday night at Boston College, coach Greg Schiano said, as Dylan Lonergan continues to recover from an injury sustained late in last week's opener.
Surace replaced Lonergan in the fourth quarter of Thursday's game against UMass and directed an 11-play, 75-yard scoring drive, culminating with a 6-yard touchdown pass to KJ Duff in Rutgers' 37-21 loss.
Lonergan left the field in the fourth quarter, went to the medical tent with an undisclosed injury and has not practiced since. Schiano said he hopes that Lonergan, a transfer from Boston College, will be available in an emergency/reserve role against his former team.
Lonergan, who started nine games last fall for BC, had 242 passing yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions against UMass. He also lost a fumble.
He competed during the offseason with Surace, who is in his third year at Rutgers. He appeared in three games as a reserve last season and had seven pass attempts.
