TORONTO -- Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes left Thursday's 4-2 loss against Tampa Bay after one at-bat with soreness in his left ribs.
"I'm going to take some days off and see, with some rest, if it calms down a little bit,'' Reyes said.
Reyes is expected to be re-evaluated Friday and most likely will miss Toronto's three-game series against the Atlanta Braves, according to multiple reports.
Reyes has been bothered by soreness in his left side for several days. He said the injury affects him most when swinging from the left side.
"The last two games I wasn't able to swing the bat the way I wanted to," he said. "It was very uncomfortable for me."
Batting left-handed against Rays right-hander Chris Archer, Reyes grimaced and held his side after grounding out in the first inning. Once back in the dugout, he slammed his batting helmet to the ground and disappeared up the tunnel to the clubhouse.
"I know my body. It happened the [second] game in Baltimore and you know what kind of series I had in Baltimore," he told reporters after the game. "That's the stuff you have to take, sometimes the stuff gets worse, but you don't know in the moment. I just want to be on the field. It was bothering me, a little bit more, and I had to get out of the game."
Ryan Goins, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo earlier in the day, replaced Reyes in the second.
Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said before the game that he intended to give Reyes a day off Saturday, with Steve Tolleson expected to start in his place.
Gibbons said the decision to recall Goins was not made because of Reyes' lingering pain, but to get Toronto back to a seven-man bullpen. Goins replaces right-hander Todd Redmond, who was designated for assignment.
