WASHINGTON -- Nationals third baseman Yunel Escobar left Friday's 10-3 loss against Milwaukee after a collision while trying to catch a foul ball in the first inning.
Escobar raced after Adam Lind's popup as it sailed toward seats down the left-field line. The ball dropped on the warning track, and Escobar bumped the wall with his left thigh before his head jerked back upon hitting a fan's chest.
Escobar sat up against the wall and held his neck. He received a visit from manager Matt Williams and a member of Washington's training staff, who checked him and eventually escorted him into the dugout.
Williams said after the game that Escobar was diagnosed with a hyperextended neck and is day-to-day.
"He ran into a fan trying to catch that ball. As he went to reach for it, he kinda leaned over with his upper body," Wiliams said. "The fence caught him at the waste and hyperextended his neck a little bit. So he's a little sore. We'll see how he is tomorrow. For now, he's day to day."
Escobar is batting .305 with nine homers and 40 RBIs this season.
