CINCINNATI -- Pirates manager Clint Hurdle and left fielder Starling Marte were ejected in the middle of the sixth inning after disputing a play at second base. The ejections were Pittsburgh's first two of the season.
Marte was hit on the back of the left hand by a pitch from Alfredo Simon, the third batter plunked in the game overall. After taking first, Marte tried to steal second base but was tagged out by Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips. He was originally ruled safe, but the call was reversed on review.
Hurdle came out of the dugout to argue with the umpires and was ejected. Marte got his glove and started to head back onto the field and was ejected as he went past the umpires.
That was just half of the four total ejections in Wednesday's game. Pirates reliever Ross Ohlendorf was ejected by plate umpire Jeff Kellogg for hitting David Freese in the ninth, and Reds manager Bryan Price was tossed as well.
Six total batters were hit in the game, a 5-4 Pittsburgh victory.
"It was an interesting game in a lot of different ways," Hurdle said. "A lot went on, and I'm proud of our club for battling."
