Left-handed reliever Craig Breslow and outfielder Drew Stubbs have agreed to minor league deals with the Minnesota Twins.
Breslow told Fox Sports that he has made changes to his delivery and turned down better financial offers from other clubs.
"But this wasn't just about dollars. It was about finding the right fit, given where I am in my career and where I am in the progression of this reinvention of self. [Twins chief baseball officer] Derek [Falvey] used the term 'partnership,' which I think perfectly captures what I want this to be," he told Fox Sports.
Breslow has a career ERA of 3.35, with 419 strikeouts and a 22-29 record over 12 seasons.
Breslow signed with the Marlins last season but was designated for assignment in May and released in July. He had two stints with the Boston Red Sox, in 2006-07 and from 2012 to 2015.
His best season was with the Red Sox in 2013, when he was 5-2 with a 1.81 ERA in 61 games and 59â…” innings in the regular season, holding opposing batters to a .228 batting average.
Breslow, a graduate of Yale with a degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry, was drafted in 2002 by the Milwaukee Brewers and debuted in the majors in 2005 with the San Diego Padres. He also has played for the Cleveland Indians, Oakland Athletics and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Stubbs, meanwhile, will report to big league spring training.
The eighth overall pick in the 2006 amateur draft, Stubbs hit a career-high 22 home runs for Cincinnati in 2010, but he led the majors with 205 strikeouts the following year.
He was a regular in the lineup for five seasons, including with Cleveland in 2013 and with Colorado in 2014. The 32-year-old has bounced among Colorado, Texas, Atlanta and Baltimore over the past two seasons. In 901 major league games, Stubbs has a .244 batting average and a .707 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.
He figures to compete with Robbie Grossman, Danny Santana and fellow nonroster player J.B. Shuck for backup outfield spots.
