The 2-year-old son of Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver died June 28 after he was found unresponsive in a swimming pool by family members at a residence outside Houston.
Oliver and his family have been mourning the tragic loss, and he is asking, according to a source close to him, for "privacy and prayers at this very difficult time."
The Bills acknowledged the tragedy in a statement Saturday.
"On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devasting loss of his son," Bills general manager Brandon Beane said. "It's an unthinkable tragedy for any parent. We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss."
The Bills had been aware of the incident since it occurred, and Oliver has participated in team activities throughout training camp. Oliver and the Bills were in alignment on revealing what happened to his son, who was also named Ed, at this time.
On June 28, Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to an in-progress life-in-danger call. Upon arrival, deputies were told that the parents of a boy had found him unresponsive in the home's swimming pool, according to the sheriff's office.
The child was taken by ambulance to a Houston hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:18 p.m.
The sheriff's office did not name Oliver or the family and did not respond to a recent request for an update on the investigation into the incident.
Oliver was not with the Bills in Cleveland for their preseason game against the Browns as he is nursing a minor injury and the team made an early decision that most veteran starters would not play. Oliver, 28, has spent his entire career with the Bills organization after being drafted ninth out of Houston in 2019. He also has a daughter, Ava.
