News: 42 minutes agoDobes will tend the twine at home in Saturday's split-squad preseason game versus the Maple Leafs.
Spin: Dobes will get his first action of the preseason on home ice, while Sam Montembeault is handling the net for the Canadiens' road squad in Toronto. The 25-year-old Dobes went 29-10-4 with a 2.78 GAA and a .901 save percentage over 43 regular-season contests in 2025-26 as well as leading Montreal to the Eastern Conference Finals. Dobes is likely the early favorite for the No. 1 job for the Canadiens, but it's not yet clear if the team will carry three goalies heading into the campaign.
ESPN Fantasy Projection: Dobes began last season as the backup to Sam Montembeault, but he won each of his first six starts and eventually grabbed hold of the No. 1 job despite the presence of not only Montembeault, but also rookie Jacob Fowler. Dobes finished with a 29-10-4 record along with a 2.78 GAA and .901 save percentage in 43 appearances. He started each of Montreal's 19 playoff games, managing a 2.66 GAA and .908 save percentage. Based upon merit alone, Dobes should open the 2026-27 campaign as the starter for the Habs, but both Montembeault and Fowler are still around. The latter represents a greater threat to Dobes' playing time than the former, but a three-year, $16 million extension signed in early July suggests Dobes should be viewed as the primary option come training camp.
