Pisani scores deciding goal in Oilers' shootout with Flames

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Mike Morrison has come a long way from

the ECHL to an NHL shootout.

Fernando Pisani scored the deciding goal in the tiebreaker, and

Morrison made 27 saves as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Calgary

Flames 2-1 Friday night.

After each team's first three shooters failed to score, Pisani

beat Miikka Kiprusoff through the legs on a deke.

"I got out there and I just had one move in my mind and I

thought if I do it and it works, that's great," Pisani said.

Morrison was glad to see another goaltender burned by the play.

"He's done that to me about 300 times in practice so I'm glad

it worked when we needed it," Morrison said.

Calgary's Chuck Kobasew was the final Flames shooter but he was

turned aside by Morrison, giving the Oilers their fifth win in six

games.

"When they were going down on Kipper and then coming down on me

it was so, so loud," Morrison said. "You don't realize it until

after the shot and it kind of dulls down and your ears are ringing.

It was exciting. You cant beat that."

Radek Dvorak scored for Edmonton, which moved within two points

of second-place Calgary in the Northwest Division.

Marcus Nilson scored for the Flames, who lost for only the

second time in their last 12 (10-1-1).

"We had some good scoring chances in the third period, but the

other goalie, he played a good game and he was just a little bit

better," said Kiprusoff, who finished with 33 saves.

Both teams had great chances to score in overtime but both

goalies stayed strong.

Edmonton had an opportunity to win late when Ethan Moreau burst

through and forced defenseman Roman Hamrlik to take a hooking

penalty with 12 seconds left in regulation.

However, despite applying steady pressure through the subsequent

4-on-3 advantage, the Oilers couldn't get the puck past Kiprusoff.

Morrison stymied the Flames for over 51 minutes before Nilson

scored at 11:34 to tie it 1-1. Steven Reinprecht slid a pass

through the slot that slipped between the skates of Oilers

defenseman Steve Staios and was jammed in the open side by Nilson.

Making his third start in a row, Morrison improved to 4-0.

His run took a while to get started. After being recalled from

Greenville of the ECHL on Oct. 24th when Ty Conklin was sent to

Hamilton (AHL) on a conditioning stint, Morrison sat on the bench

and backed up Jussi Markkanen for his first 10 games with the

Oilers.

After winning his first NHL start in Colorado on Nov. 14th,

Morrison has started four of Edmonton's last six games. He has a

1.48 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage in that span.

"We threw him to the wolves in Colorado and that's always a

tough building to win in as well," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish

said. "We weren't in a great situation when he went in there, and

if you can handle the pressure in your first start in that

building, you can handle the start in Game 4 here in Calgary. He's

shown a lot of composure."

Meanwhile, Conklin has been on the sideline since returning from

his conditioning stint, having missed the last eight games with a

groin injury.

Edmonton took the lead at 14:42 of the first period.

Jarret Stoll spotted Dvorak open on the far side of the net and

zipped a pass across that Dvorak one-timed in the open side.

Kiprusoff would not be beaten the rest of the way until the

shootout. He made several great saves, including a diving stop with

the paddle of his stick denying Stoll of what looked to be a sure

goal in the final seconds of the first period.

"He's a great goalie," Morrison said. "I can remember

watching him in the playoffs last year while I was on a cruise in

the Caribbean and here I am playing against him."

Kiprusoff also started the second period with a similar stop,

thwarting Marty Reasoner at the side of the net.Game notes
