The second matchday of the 2026-27 A-League Men season is in the books and there is plenty of action to dissect.
Here's the lowdown on whose stocks are up, whose stocks are down, and what has the people talking coming out of the weekend.
Stocks Up: Talay's new dawn at Wanderland?
The standout performance of the A-League Men's second weekend belonged to the Western Sydney Wanderers, who thrashed defending champions Auckland FC 5-2 at home.
Ufuk Talay's appointment as manager from crosstown rivals Sydney FC and the return of Nicolas Milanovic both sounded promising on paper. But preseason optimism has become a familiar theme at Wanderland, where expectations have repeatedly failed to translate into results.
Saturday's demolition of Auckland, however, offered an early indication that Talay's side might finally deliver on that promise.
The Wanderers struck five times, with five different scorers, looking almost unrecognisable from the side that managed a league-low 27 goals in 26 matches last season. Combining 62% possession with aggressive pressing and devastating counterattacks -- four of their five goals came in transition -- the Wanderers repeatedly exposed Auckland's defence, offering an early glimpse of the style of football Talay is looking to implement.
Perhaps most encouraging for Talay was the belief and resilience his side showed when Auckland threatened a comeback.
Having overturned an early 1-0 deficit with three unanswered goals, the Wanderers saw their lead cut to 3-2.
Rather than retreat, they continued to attack, with the often-unplayable Miguel Di Pizio scoring a superb fourth before teenager Atiya Waraga completed the rout.
"No, there's no sitting back here," Talay said when asked whether his side had considered protecting their lead. "When the game was 3-2, we still wanted to go and score goals."
A resurgent Wanderers would be a welcome boost for an A-League desperately in need of one. Based in one of Australia's great football heartlands, with a passionate supporter base and world-class facilities, Western Sydney have all the ingredients to be one of the competition's biggest drawcards.
In their early years, they were exactly that, winning the premiership in their inaugural season, reaching three Grand Finals in four years and famously becoming Asian champions in 2014.
But years of underachievement and questionable boardroom decisions have taken their toll, with the club seemingly losing its identity and attendances suffering, highlighted by a season-low home crowd of just 4,461 against Wellington Phoenix in February. A succession of coaches have tried and failed to restore the Wanderers to their Tony Popovic-era glory, and whether Talay can succeed where they failed remains to be seen. But there are at least signs of a clear identity emerging.
"I think the football that we play should represent our people in our region," he said. "When we have the ball, we turn into footballers, and we play a certain brand of football."
Saturday's crowd of 8,283 was hardly spectacular, but if Talay can get the side playing attractive, winning football, history suggests supporters will return to Parramatta in droves.
Stock down: Another derby disappointment
Two rounds into the season, two of the competition's biggest rivalries have taken centre stage, but neither has quite delivered the spectacle supporters might have hoped for.
After Sydney FC and Western Sydney played out a goalless draw in front of more than 30,000 fans in the opening round, Saturday's Melbourne Derby ended 1-1, leaving both Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City winless.
It was an intense, albeit scrappy contest that lacked sustained, free-flowing attacking football, with many threatening moments coming from crosses and set pieces rather than incisive build-up play.
Perhaps that is simply the nature of derbies, where the stakes and emotion often outweigh the quality of football.
But for Victory, ESPN's preseason pick to finish premiers, the result raised further questions about their attacking potency following last week's loss to Wellington.
New manager Giovanni Savarese's side made a flying start, with Keegan Jelacic firing them ahead after seven minutes following excellent combination play with Charles Nduka. But despite enjoying the better of the opening half, Victory failed to build on their lead, with Andrew Nabbout equalising for City shortly after the break.
The statistics highlighted Victory's lack of attacking penetration. They generated just 0.57 expected goals (xG) from 13 shots, compared with City's 1.67 from 16, and managed only nine touches inside the opposition penalty area to their rivals' 20.
Savarese felt his side had dropped two points, although he acknowledged his players needed to be "a little more brave" in attack.
City coach Aurelio Vidmar, meanwhile, believed a draw was a fair result, lamenting his side's sluggish start.
"They had more run. They had more fire. They were picking up second balls," he said. "We managed to turn that around in the second half, and I thought it was a much better performance."
With both Melbourne heavyweights expected to challenge for silverware, neither will be satisfied with one point from their opening two matches.
Moment of the Weekend: Nam Tae-Hee announces his arrival
Tasked with replacing outgoing club legend Jay O'Shea, new Brisbane Roar recruit Nam Tae-Hee, capped 54 times by South Korea, made an immediate impression on his A-League debut, flicking the ball up before unleashing a stunning volley from outside the box to double his side's lead in a 2-1 win over Perth Glory.
The Week Ahead: Can Greenacre keep the Phoenix flying?
Few expected much from Wellington Phoenix this season. ESPN predicted an 11th-place finish, with the loss of key attacking players compounding concerns for a defence that conceded a league-high 48 goals last term.
But two rounds in, manager Chris Greenacre's side are already threatening to make a mockery of those predictions.
After opening with a 2-1 triumph over Victory, the Nix followed it up with a 2-0 win against the Central Coast Mariners, putting them top of the A-League table heading into Round 3.
For club legend Greenacre, it has been a dream start to his first full season in charge. But is this simply a case of the new-manager bounce, or the beginning of something more significant?
Former players are often appointed amid promises of restoring a club's identity, reconnecting with supporters and understanding its culture. Just look at Michael Carrick, whose impressive interim spell at Manchester United earned him the permanent job, only for results to unravel this season, leaving him reportedly on the brink of dismissal.
Greenacre won four of eight matches as interim boss last season, suggesting his impact may be more than a fleeting bounce. But can he sustain it?
Saturday's trip to reigning premiers Newcastle Jets offers Greenacre the chance to strengthen the case that he is building something special in Wellington.
