RICHMOND, Va. -- The Redskins will conduct a 45-minute walk-through Wednesday morning before heading to Cleveland for Thursday’s preseason opener. Three areas of interest for your wakeup call:
Tight end Logan Paulsen. He went to see Dr. Robert Anderson in North Carolina on Tuesday to determine the severity of his toe injury. Paulsen has been one of the Redskins top three tight ends, though he’s more of a blocker. He, too, has bulked up this offseason to better handle the blocking duties. With Paulsen out, it’s a good opportunity for players such as Chase Dixon, Je’Ron Hamm and Devin Mahina. The first two have jumped out more this summer.
Defensive starters. The Redskins know the offense will play at least a quarter and perhaps more, depending on how the game goes. But the defensive side sounded a little less unsettled as to how much they would play. Some of their potential secondary members won’t play, including corners Bashaud Breeland, David Amerson and safety Jeron Johnson. Nor will linebacker Ryan Kerrigan or Junior Galette. So the Redskins might be less apt to play the other starters as much as they will those on offense. Not sure if coach Jay Gruden will say much about this Wednesday or not.
Backup quarterback. Coach Jay Gruden did not address this Tuesday and Colt McCoy said he did not know yet, but Kirk Cousins said he was told he’d be the No. 2 quarterback Thursday. That meshes with the unofficial depth chart put out earlier this week. Regardless, this battle will be conducted through the preseason and if Cousins indeed is the No. 2 guy Thursday, then based on how they’re rotating in camp, McCoy would be in that role in the second preseason game.
