TEMPE, Ariz. -- Depth is good.
Too much depth, however, can be a problem. But in the case of the Arizona Cardinals, it could end up being a benefit in the long run.
General manager Steve Keim said Thursday on Doug and Wolf on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM that Arizona has enough depth at certain positions to be actively seeking trades between now and training camp.
“We’re either going to have the ability to trade a player or two or four or five at certain positions that can not only make other NFL rosters, that can potential start for some teams,” Keim said. “So, I have to be active and make sure that I address that situation so we’re not just releasing players and allowing teams to pick them up.
“Hopefully, you can be active and get some solid value for guys who can help other teams.”
Depth has been a major storyline for the Cardinals throughout organized team and minicamp.
They were noticeably deep on defense, especially in the secondary at both cornerback and safety, and on the defensive line. Whether those positions are impacted by trades will be determined by what Arizona can get in return and if defensive coordinator James Bettcher will have enough options to run the scheme he wants.
“It’s a good concern,” Keim said.
Coming Monday: The first of three positions that are deep enough for Keim to consider trading.
