GLENDALE, Ariz. -- It was report and conditioning test day at University of Phoenix Stadium as the Arizona Cardinals get set for the official start of training camp on Saturday.
The latest addition to the roster is cornerback Shaq Richardson, whom the Cardinals signed Friday. Richardson should be well known to football fans around the state; he played at Arizona and was drafted in the fifth round (157th overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2014.
The 6-foot, 194-pound defensive back was on the Steelers’ practice squad until Oct. 15 last season, when he was released. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in February of this year but was released on April 21.
The Cardinals are pretty well stocked at cornerback, with shutdown corner Patrick Peterson along with co-starter Jerraud Powers and Justin Bethel back. Four other cornerbacks are in camp, not including Richardson.
“Patrick’s probably the biggest one,” Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said Friday when asked what players stand out as far as those who have reshaped their bodies in the offseason.
Richardson essentially takes the roster spot vacated by the release of Alfonzo Dennard, whom the Cardinals cut earlier this week. Prior to his rookie year in the NFL, Richardson played in 49 games with 37 starts in four seasons at Arizona, and intercepted 10 passes with 30 pass breakups.
Richardson will wear No. 37. He was in camp Friday for testing, Arians said.
