TEMPE, Ariz. -- Two of the most senior Arizona Cardinals are looking for work.
Arizona released punter Dave Zastudil and linebacker Lorenzo Alexander on Monday, part of trimming the roster to 75 players. They have a combined for 20 seasons and 273 games on their resumes.
Zastudil, 36, played in just games last season because of a groin injury. Alexander, 32, played in all 16 games last season a year after missing the final 13 with a Lisfranc injury. Alexander’s contributions were felt more on special teams, where he was a Pro Bowler in 2012 with the Washington Redskins. He was part of the first wave of free agents signed by coach Bruce Arians after getting hired in 2013.
“It’s always hard when you let a vet go whose kind of been a cornerstone,” Arians said. “He was a captain for two years.
“It’s never easy saying goodbye to those guys.”
The decision to release Zastudil came down to Drew Butler's consistency in practice.
“I think he won the battle easily on the daily basis,” Arians said.
The Cardinals released 10 players and waived/injured one, wide receiver Travis Harvey. They have until Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET to get to 75 players. Arizona will reduce its roster again to 53 by 4 p.m. Saturday.
