FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The first day of organized team activities wasn't necessary indicative of the pass-rush group the Atlanta Falcons plan to use during the regular season.
Defensive end Adrian Clayborn and nose tackle Grady Jarrett, both expected to be part of the team's nickel rush package, mainly observed as the team went through its first OTA. Clayborn has a strained pectoral muscle and was limited to individual drills. Meanwhile, Jarrett didn't emerge onto the field until late, likely getting treatment for the knee tendonitis revealed by coach Dan Quinn.
Jarrett will sit out the rest of the week, while Clayborn's return to full clearance is unknown. Without them on the field, the primary pass-rush foursome in nickel was Vic Beasley and Brooks Reed on the edges with Derrick Shelby and Jonathan Babineaux inside. In the base defense, Joey Mbu replaced Jarrett at the nose.
Other players held out due to injuries included kick returner Devin Hester (toe surgery), guard Chris Chester (shoulder surgery), and center/guard James Stone (ACL). Rookie wide receiver Devin Fuller (hamstring) was limited.
Rookie tight end Austin Hooper was absent from practice while finishing his classwork at Stanford.
