A day before the Baltimore Ravens' first training camp practice, the team made a small change at wide receiver, waiving undrafted rookie Cam Worthy and signing a project in Tom Nelson.
The interesting part of this move is Nelson hasn't played wide receiver. He's a 28-year-old safety who is converting to wide receiver in an attempt to revive his career. Nelson has been out of football since being cut by the Panthers last August.
At 5-foot-10, 200 pounds, he's likely going to line up in the slot. It's going to be a challenge to make the Ravens' roster because Baltimore returns five receivers (Steve Smith Sr., Kamar Aiken, Marlon Brown, Michael Campanaro and Jeremy Butler) and selected two in the draft (Breshad Perriman and Darren Waller).
Nelson played defensive back for four teams in five seasons (Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Chicago and Carolina). He made 36 tackles in 24 games.
The Ravens had placed Worthy on the physically unable to perform list last week. He was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot this spring.
