PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- The first four days of Buffalo Bills training camp have offered what many expected -- sub-par quarterback play -- but the evaluation of that position won't kick into a higher gear until the team returns from its off day Wednesday.
"I think it's so early," coach Rex Ryan said before Monday evening's practice. "It really is so early that we're not ready ... we're just putting plays in, on both sides of the ball. It's not like [offensive coordinator] Greg [Roman] is sitting back game-planning our defense or anything else. That would be a truer test of it."
So when does early become not-so-early?
"After tonight's practice, probably," Ryan quipped. "No, but really we're gonna start doing some specific things after the day off [Tuesday]. We'll probably start having a period or two where it is specific based on opponent and things like that. So that's when we'll start seeing our guys go."
Ryan revealed that Saturday's practice, scheduled from 7-9 p.m., will be an intrasquad scrimmage.
"I think that scrimmage that we're gonna have it is important," Ryan said. "I think that's just as important as a preseason game. ... You'll see the cream rise to the top that day, generally. And that's when it needs to."
