ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- After sitting out the past two weeks because of a lingering hamstring injury, star running back LeSean McCoy will return to Buffalo Bills practice Wednesday on a limited basis.
McCoy’s status for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals remains uncertain.
“I think he’s gonna be … he might not be full go, but I think you’ll start to see him on a limited basis,” coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday. “He’s worked awful hard. He’s trying to get back. Will he be back, what the timetable is, I’m not sure. But I bet he’ll be limited today. So I think you’ll see him out there today.”
Rookie Karlos Williams, who averaged 5.4 yards per carry through the first four weeks of the season before suffering a concussion, remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol.
“See, I don’t know what the phases are. I just know that I’m supposed to say he’s in the protocol,” Ryan said Wednesday. “If I say something and then I’m wrong, it’s … I’m not trying to hold any information from you. I just don’t want to say the wrong thing.”
The Bills were without both McCoy and Williams for last Sunday’s 14-13 victory over the Tennessee Titans, and are down to Boobie Dixon and Dan Herron as their only healthy running backs. Cierre Wood suffered a season-ending knee injury in Sunday’s game.
Ryan, however, has no plans to add another running back to the mix.
“That’s a possibility, but we’re not looking at that right now,” he said.
One emergency option would be fullback Jerome Felton, who has five carries in the past two seasons.
"I guess we can run Jerome Felton for three yards and a cloud of dust, or something. I mean, I don’t know what you want me to tell you. I can sit up here and lie and say, ‘Oh, we’ll be great. Lookie, lookie, here comes Felton,” Ryan quipped, a twist on the “Lookie, lookie, here comes Cookie” line that Bills fans used with running back Cookie Gilchrist in the 1960s.
