CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Many members of the Carolina Panthers had the same question the rest of the Twitter world did after Super Bowl XLIX: Why didn’t Seattle give the ball to running back Marshawn Lynch at the 1-yard line with 20 seconds remaining?
As has been well documented by commentators, writers and fans, the Seahawks made one of the worst calls in Super Bowl history.
If you missed it, quarterback Russell Wilson’s pass over the middle was intercepted by little-known cornerback Malcolm Butler to seal New England’s 28-24 victory.
Here’s what a few of the Panthers said about the decision not to give the ball to Lynch:
Running back Jonathan Stewart:
Wow why not let @MoneyLynch win the game
— Jonathan Stewart (@Jonathanstewar1) February 2, 2015 Running back DeAngelo Williams:
Qb league my ass give the ball to your rb and let him run damnit but what do I know I'm watching the game with everyone else! #rbpains
— DeAngelo Williams (@DeAngeloRB) February 2, 2015 Safety Tre Boston:
Why not go to Lynch? Lol #Wow
— Tre Boston (@TreBos10) February 2, 2015 Linebacker Chase Blackburn:
How you don't give it to the best RB in the game on the one. I'll never know
— Chase Blackburn (@Blackburn5793) February 2, 2015 DE Charles Johnson:
I would have check out of that play once the OC would have sent it in. I would have sent it right back
— charles johnson (@randywattson) February 2, 2015 Those who weren't questioning the call were giving kudos to former Carolina wide receiver Brandon LaFell.LaFell spent his first four NFL seasons with the Panthers before signing in the offseason with New England. His 11-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter gave the Patriots a 7-0 lead.
Cornerback Josh Norman:
Lafell got a ring...??
WoW! Salud kid, may it be Joyous!!! Brotha????
— *Joshua R. Norman (@J_No24) February 2, 2015 Defensive end Mario Addison:
Great Job My Boi @blafell1 The Lord Will Always Do What Man Can't #Blessed http://t.co/DOvrzIA30J
— Mario Addison (@HIT_STIQ4) February 2, 2015 Wide receiver Brenton Bersin:
Congrats @Blafell1 on the super bowl win!
— Brenton Bersin (@bbersin10) February 2, 2015 Linebacker Chase Blackburn:
