CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Jarrett Boykin Era never really began with the Carolina Panthers.
Signed during the offseason as a free agent out of Green Bay to upgrade the wide receiver position, Boykin was among seven players released on Tuesday to get the Panthers' roster down to 75.
Carolina also placed wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin on injured reserve.
Here's a complete look at the transactions:
Most significant move: Has to be Boykin. The Panthers gave him a $700,000 contract believing he could be among the top four receivers. He never was better than on the bubble for the top six. It was a bad sign for Boykin when the Panthers traded an undisclosed 2017 draft pick to Seattle on Monday for Kevin Norwood.
White out: Cornerback Melvin White started 17 games in two seasons, including the opener last year. He became expendable with the addition of Charles Tillman and the emergence of Josh Norman and Bene' Benwikere.
What's next? There really shouldn't be any huge surprises on Saturday when the roster is reduced to 53. The toughest cuts will be at linebacker and running back. Undrafted rookie Brandon Wegher has three preseason touchdowns, but he's still the fifth back.
Panthers' cuts: WR Jarrett Boykin, DT Kenny Horsley, S Robert Lester, WR/CB De'Andre Presley, OT Davonte Wallace (waived injured), CB Melvin White (waived injured), DT Micanor Regis (waived injury settlement).
