IRVING, Texas – The 2009 draft was among the worst in Dallas Cowboys’ history.
They didn’t have a first-round pick that year because of the trade for wide receiver Roy Williams from the Detroit Lions in 2008. They traded away their second-round pick to get the Buffalo Bills’ third- and fourth-round selections.
They took linebacker Jason Williams with their first pick, No. 69 overall. An unbelievable athlete, Williams struggled as a football player, although he is still in the league. With the third-rounder they got from Buffalo, they took guard Robert Brewster and he never played in a game for them.
The best pick of the bunch might have been linebacker Victor Butler (fourth round) or tight end John Phillips (sixth round).
The Cowboys had 12 picks in Rounds 3-7 and received little to no impact.
On Thursday, ESPN Insider Mel Kiper re-drafted the first round. Matthew Stafford still went with the top overall pick, but the rest of the draft shows you just how awful the 2009 class was for everybody, including the Cowboys.
Two of the top four picks in the draft aren’t even in the NFL anymore.
Julian Edelman was the 232nd pick in 2009 by the New England Patriots as a quarterback turned wide receiver. In Kiper’s re-draft, Edelman went No. 4 overall.
Only 13 first-round picks actually selected in 2009 remained in Kiper’s re-draft. Ten of the re-drafted first rounders were actually picked in the third round or later.
Just a little something to keep in mind for next month’s first round and what we could be saying in 2020.
