OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys running back Lance Dunbar was knocked out of Wednesday’s practice with a right ankle injury, but it does not appear serious, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.
Dunbar got hurt on the third play of team drills after a low hit. He ran down the field to finish the play but was limping noticeably and eventually left the field. With Darren McFadden out with a hamstring injury, the Cowboys were down to Joseph Randle, Lache Seastrunk and Gus Johnson at tailback.
Dunbar has had a positive start to camp as he looks to fill a major role on the offense as a third-down back.
“I think that was an awkward tackle or hit that was made on him and I think it just tweaked something,” Jones said. “But we don’t think it’s serious at this point.”
The Cowboys are hopeful McFadden can return soon, perhaps after Friday’s off day. He is on the active/physically unable to perform list with a hamstring injury.
“I think he’s making great progress,” Jones said. “We’re doing it the way we want to do it, which is really wanting to make sure when we put him out there there’s nothing lingering with him. I think we’ll get better results that way.”
Jones said it was too early for the Cowboys to consider bringing in another running back.
Defensive tackle Terrell McClain did not practice because of a bone bruise and hamstring injury and defensive tackle Chris Whaley has a sore knee. Linebacker Will Smith has a groin injury.
