GREEN BAY, Wis. -- It turns out Tim Masthay was right to view the Green Bay Packers' decision to release punter Cody Mandell on Monday as "a vote of confidence from the organization."
Although general manage Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy both praised Mandell -- with McCarthy saying "he can definitely punt in this league" -- it was clear they felt Masthay's struggles from late last season were behind him.
"I feel strong about Tim Masthay and moving forward with him," McCarthy said.
Thompson also mentioned the need for depth at other positions on the roster, but even with Mandell they were one short of the 90-man training camp limit. Now, they're at 88.
"Quite frankly from a roster standpoint we felt like we needed to do something in terms of the depth part," Thompson said. "But no, Cody did fine. Tim's a good punter. We thought he did a nice job."
