GREEN BAY, Wis. -- It doesn't mean he would have signed with the Green Bay Packers, but linebacker Danny Trevathan sounded like he would have certainly been willing to listen had general manager Ted Thompson called before he signed with the Chicago Bears on the first day of free agency.
The Packers had been mentioned as a possible landing spot for the former Denver Broncos starter in free agency in large part because coach Mike McCarthy wants to move Clay Matthews back to outside linebacker. Some believe that that in order to do that, they need an impact inside linebacker to replace him.
But Trevathan said Thursday in an appearance on NFL Network that the Packers never called.
"I wish they would have, but they didn't," he said. "My guy Randall Cobb is over there, but they didn't so I'm here with Chicago."
Trevathan played with Cobb in college at the University of Kentucky.
It's worth noting that Trevathan was asked about Green Bay by Packers receiver James Jones, a free agent who was serving as a guest studio host.
The Bears gave Trevathan a four-year, $24.5 million contract that included $12 million guaranteed.
Meanwhile, the Packers did not host a single free agent Thursday.
