GREEN BAY, Wis. – Well that didn’t last long. The Green Bay Packers, who last week reached the 90-man offseason roster limit for the first time in 2016, have an open spot again.
After two days of OTA practices, they waived first-year guard/tackle Vince Kowalski on Wednesday.
In practice a day earlier, Kowalski lined up at left guard with the No. 2 offensive line. He had been with the Packers last offseason as well, but was cut during training camp. The former undrafted free agent from Villanova was re-signed March 11.
No explanation was given for the move, and nobody was signed or claimed off waivers to take Kowalski’s roster spot.
Perhaps general manager Ted Thompson will simply keep the spot open, but there’s always the possibility that he could use it to re-sign veteran fullback John Kuhn, although at this point that would appear to be on hold.
“As far as his situation, we’re still focused on the players we have right now,” coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday. “So as far as John and his future, those are probably questions for other people. But I don’t think you ever close the door. But guys filled out our roster and right now we’re working and focusing on these young players.”
