This week we continue taking a look at the Houston Texans players who will become free agents when the league year expires. Read the whole series here.
Safety Quintin Demps
2015 numbers: 61 tackles, 35 solo tackles, half a sack, two fumble recoveries, one interception, one fumble returned for a touchdown, six passes defensed.
How he became a Texan: Spent some time with Texans in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Returned to the roster during 2015's training camp, signed as a free agent.
Why he might return: Demps started 13 games for the Texans this season, played in one he didn't start and was inactive for two. He helped settle a safety position that was very much in question heading into the season. Demps played well there and made some big plays during the stretch of games in which the Texans made their successful playoff push. He was instrumental in stalling the Cincinnati Bengals' final drive, recovering a fumble by Bengals receiver A.J. Green with less than a minute to play. Demps made a positive impact and that could play favorably for the Texans and they could bring him back as a backup even if they address the position this offseason.
Why he might not return: Safety has been somewhat of a blind spot for the Texans lately. They tried signing Ed Reed and that didn't work. They tried drafting D.J. Swearinger in the second round in 2013 and that didn't work either. They tried signing Rahim Moore in last year's free agency, but benched him during the season. After last season the Texans completely redid the position and that could be something they do again.
