HOUSTON -- On Tuesday I introduced you to Tyler Ervin, the new running back wearing No. 23 for the Houston Texans.
About that ...
Things have changed. While Ervin initially selected Arian Foster's old number, he asked for a change to No. 34, I'm told, in the interest of creating his own legacy. He might switch again after final cuts are made.
There is still a player on the roster wearing the number -- safety Kurtis Drummond is currently listed as No. 23, having also switched. It's not a protected number.
The Texans selected Ervin in the fourth round of this weekend's draft out of San Jose State. After players are drafted, they are given a list of available numbers from which to choose that the league allows for their positions.
Ervin wore No. 7 in college, but since he's not a quarterback, kicker or punter, he can't wear it in the NFL. Running backs can wear any number from 20 through 49.
First-round pick receiver Will Fuller is wearing 15, second-round pick center Nick Martin will wear 66, third-round pick receiver Braxton Miller is wearing 13 and fifth round picks safety K.J. Dillon and defensive tackle D.J. Reader are wearing 36 and 98.
