INDIANAPOLIS -- It was two years ago that the Indianapolis Colts signed Donald Thomas to be one of their starting guards on the offensive line.
Thomas' résumé with the Colts since signing with them in 2013 consists of just two games, a torn bicep and quad and lots of frustration.
Thomas is a mystery player for the Colts. It's hard to know what he can contribute because he's constantly been injured.
It's reached the point that Thomas simply wants to focus on getting healthy to be in the position to compete for playing time.
"If I had to put a gauge on it percentage wise, I couldn't give you that right now," Thomas said. "My main thing is just I'm not 100 percent right now. The hardest thing about that is the being able to try to get back to that."
Thomas tore his quad and bicep in Week 2 of the 2013 season. Then he re-tore the same quad early in training camp last season, ending any chance of him playing in 2014.
And that's why Thomas is a mystery player to many.
"At the end of the day, it's frustrating at times because nobody knows how I look 100 percent healthy," he said. "It's not an easy feeling to go through something like this, but at the same time, you have to deal with it and take it day-by-day and try to get back and hopefully when the dust settles show everybody what you can do."
Thomas, who can also play center, finds himself in a battle at guard because Todd Herremans is the frontrunner to start with Jack Mewhort at that position. Hugh Thornton, who has started in place of the injured Thomas the past two seasons, Lance Louis, Ben Heenan and Joe Reitz are also competing for playing time at guard.
"It's always good to have competition," Thomas said. "It makes you better. I just want to get back in and compete to play. That's my main focus, getting back and getting in the mix and being one of those guys that can compete."
