JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- One day after Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette said he would be able to play through a quad injury, the team officially listed him as questionable for Sunday’s game against Houston.
In addition, the team ruled receivers Allen Hurns (ankle) and Larry Pinkard (concussion) out.
Fournette did not practice at all this week and watched Friday’s workout from the side in a hoodie and sweatpants. Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said Fournette has earned enough trust to be able to miss practice and still play on Sundays.
“You’re at a point now in the season where it’s just a matter of being cautious,” Marrone said.
There’s two ways to take that statement:
The Jaguars were being cautious with Fournette all week in keeping him out of practice so he could get treatment on his quad to be able to play on Sunday.
The Jaguars will hold him out of Sunday’s game against the Texans (4-9) to make sure he’s healthy for the final two weeks and playoffs. The Jaguars (9-4) can clinch the franchise’s first playoff appearance since 2007 by beating the Texans.
Fournette said he was injured when he caught a screen pass and was pushed out of bounds early in the third quarter of last Sunday's victory over Seattle. He remained in the game and finished with 101 yards rushing, including a 13-yard run on third-and-11 with less than two minutes to play that sealed the victory.
Hurns hasn’t practiced since he crawled off the field late in regulation of the Jaguars’ 20-17 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Nov. 12. He did that to avoid a 10-second runoff, which would have impacted the Jaguars’ chance to get into position for the tying field goal.
