We’ll continue our series looking at what the Chiefs can expect from each of their 10 draft picks with the first of their two fifth-round choices, this one being No. 172 overall. Here are the five players selected with the 172nd pick in each of the past five drafts.
2010: Virginia Tech punter Brent Bowden was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He never punted in an NFL game. He was cut by the Bucs after training camp in his rookie season and later failed to make the regular-season roster with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
2011: Slippery Rock center Brandon Fusco was selected by the Minnesota Vikings. He started 34 games for the Vikings at guard in his four seasons. In 2013, Fusco was graded by Pro Football Focus as the eighth-rated guard among 81 players who were in the lineup for at least 25 percent of his their team’s snaps.
2012: Northwestern State defensive back Jeremy Lane was selected by the Seattle Seahawks. Lane has been a part-time player for one of the NFL’s best defensive teams. He intercepted a Tom Brady pass in last season’s Super Bowl against the New England Patriots but broke his wrist and tore his ACL on the play.
2013: Colorado tight end Nick Kasa was selected by the Oakland Raiders. Kasa has just one catch, but it went for a touchdown. He missed all of last season with a torn ACL.
2014: Middle Tennessee State defensive tackle Jimmy Staten was selected by the Seattle Seahawks. He spent some time on Seattle’s practice squad last season but didn’t play in a regular-season game. He is still with the Seahawks.
The results are uneven, which is what the Chiefs should expect from the 172nd pick. But good players can be found with this pick. The Vikings found one with Fusco in 2011. Lane has been a valuable player in some of Seattle’s sub defenses.
