Latest mailbag how did chiefs offseason acquisitions look in practice

@adamteicher, how are some of our off-season pick ups looking? Namely, Da'Rick Rogers and Tyvon Branch? Any chance they can make an impact?

@adamteicher: The Chiefs' main veteran acquisitions were wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, offensive linemen Ben Grubbs and Paul Fanaika, and safety Tyvon Branch. Maclin had a solid spring. He's a hard worker who looks to be as advertised. Now it's up to the Chiefs to get him the ball. It's difficult to get much of a gauge on the offensive linemen in the offseason because practices aren't in pads. Grubbs will start at left guard. Fanaika looks like he will be a backup. Branch will be a reserve as well, but it looks like he could play quite a bit in passing situations. Since you asked about Da'Rick Rogers, he was released last week.

@adamteicher releasing Rogers might help make room for Kenny Cook on the 53 , sounds like he might be this year's Albert wilson.

@adamteicher: Kenny Cook is an undrafted rookie who made a lot of spectacular catches in offseason practice. He's big and has tools for the Chiefs to work with. But he has a lot to prove, and at this point I don't see the Chiefs keeping him around on their 53-player roster. I've seen a lot of receivers who were great in the offseason but disappeared once the pads went on. I want to see him handle pads well before I put him on my roster.

@adamteicher: It's difficult to say what role rookie wide receiver Chris Conley will play. He was still learning the offense during the offseason and was mostly confined to playing the flanker, or Maclin's spot. As he gets more comfortable, I could see the Chiefs using him in a variety of ways.

@adamteicher: You hit on the biggest difference, that all players under contract were required to attend the minicamp while OTAs are technically voluntary. Even that point was mostly moot because the Chiefs had great attendance at the voluntary practices. In the minicamp, teams are allowed to practice for a longer period as well, but that's about it.

@adamteicher Do Chiefs have necessary cap space to sign a guy like Jermaine Gresham? Back surgery is alarming, but solid #2 if healthy.

@adamteicher: Jermaine Gresham would be a great addition to the Chiefs if he's healthy. They need a second tight end. Another problem is money. The Chiefs don't have the cap space to make a big-money signing. They'd have to clear some cap room if he costs much more than the minimum.
