KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs have had some success in recent years in finding veteran safeties on the free-agent market and are trying again with Jimmy Wilson.
Wilson, a five-year veteran who has played for the Miami Dolphins and San Diego Chargers, agreed to contract terms with the Chiefs, according to a source.
The Chiefs have the need for a veteran safety. Five safeties played significant snaps for Kansas City last season but two of them have moved on: Tyvon Branch signed as a free agent with the Arizona Cardinals and Husain Abdullah retired.
The Chiefs have starters Eric Berry, who is their franchise player and unsigned, and Ron Parker and backup Daniel Sorensen remaining from last season's group of safeties.
Wilson, 29, was a part-time starter for four seasons with the Dolphins before joining the Chargers last season. He started six games for San Diego.
The Chiefs in recent years have signed lower-cost veteran safeties in free agency in Abdullah, Branch and Kurt Coleman, who played for Kansas City in 2014 and is now with the Carolina Panthers. All played well during their time with the Chiefs.
