The Kansas City Chiefs have plenty of bodies available at cornerback after selecting three players during the recent NFL draft. But given that Marcus Peters is currently the only corner the Chiefs know they can count on, until proven otherwise, that’s still Kansas City’s position of greatest need.
Football Outsiders has a different take on that. It suggests that the guard spots need the biggest upgrade in Kansas City.
Unlike at cornerback, the Chiefs have no Pro Bowlers at guard. None of their guards is likely to ever get to a Pro Bowl.
But the Chiefs have a number of candidates for starting spots. Football Outsiders mentioned some of them: Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, Jarrod Pughsley and rookie Parker Ehinger, a fourth-round draft pick. It failed to mention two others: Zach Fulton and Jah Reid.
So the Chiefs have plenty of options at guard. The big safety net gives the Chiefs a decent chance for finding two adequate starters.
Another factor in the Chiefs’ favor at guard: Only Reid, at 27, is older than 25. So presumably the others will be improving and that’s particularly true for Duvernay-Tardif. He played college football in Canada, and the Chiefs knew when they drafted him he would take some time to develop.
The Chiefs would feel better off at guard if they had a Pro Bowler, or at least a veteran with an extensive playing history. But not every position group is going to have a player like that and guard is about as good a spot as any to be lacking a superstar.
