NAPA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders' offense hasn't always been crisp during the first five days of training camp, but it showed pretty good ball security.
Until Thursday.
The offense was sloppy. Starting quarterback Derek Carr was intercepted by cornerback DJ Hayden in a late drill. On the final play of practice, which went about 10 minutes longer than usual, undrafted rookie Tevin McDonald intercepted a pass from Christian Ponder and took it into the end zone.
Raiders offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, speaking in training camp for the first time, wasn't pleased.
"Today was a day we definitely want to learn from," Musgrave said. "As soon we learn from it, we want to forget it because it wasn't the way you play winning football. So, today we let the defense get on too many footballs. That's for sure."
In other Raiders notes:
Musgrave said he will play calls from the field in his first season with the Raiders.
Musgrave on Amari Cooper, the receiver from Alabama who was the No. 4 overall draft pick: "Amari is working hard at it and I really appreciate his approach. He works hard in the drills, very attentive in the meetings. I know we have a good one there, so we're thankful to have him."
Running back Trent Richardson, a 2012 first-round pick who is trying to make Oakland's roster, said he hopes to play on special teams as well as offense to help Oakland.
Right tackle Menelik Watson, who is leading the race to start at right tackle, did not practice Thursday because of an undisclosed injury.
