SAN DIEGO -- Absent for two weeks, the injury bug finally bit the San Diego Chargers during the team's preseason-opening win Thursday over the Dallas Cowboys.
Offensive lineman Johnnie Troutman suffered a broken right arm in the second quarter, and outside linebacker Tourek Williams suffered a fractured foot that will require surgery.
Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said as it stands now, neither player will be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list, but that could change as the training staff learns more about their injuries.
"We will evaluate it as time goes on," McCoy said. "Not right now. We're not doing that right now. But we'll see how after they see their doctors and we evaluate it a little longer as the weeks go on, then we'll figure it out as we go, but not today."
The 6-foot-4 Troutman ended 2014 on the injured reserve after suffering a knee injury against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16.
One of Troutman's assets has been his availability. He's missed just one game due to injury in the past two seasons, and he has learned to play with nagging injuries. Troutman had been dealing with a balky knee during the first two weeks of training camp.
The Chargers selected Williams in the sixth round of the 2013 draft out of Florida International. Because of injuries at the position, Williams played in 13 games his rookie season, starting six. He finished with 10 combined tackles and a sack in 2013.
Williams backed up Jarrett Johnson in 2014 and totaled 21 tackles in 127 defensive snaps. Williams also had 14 tackles on special teams, good enough for fifth on the team.
McCoy said that cornerback Chris Davis suffered a concussion, and is going through the NFL concussion protocol program.
McCoy addresses Gordon's slow start: While San Diego's reserves ran the ball well, the starters struggled to get a push up front, with Melvin Gordon gaining just 11 yards on six carries. Gordon took the blame for his slow start. However, McCoy said Gordon also didn't get much help up front.
"We can only be as good as our weakest link," McCoy said. "But we've got to finish some blocks at the second level. The first play of the game we didn't block it correctly. If we didn't have a free guy on the backside, who knows how far he goes."
McCoy also liked the fact that Gordon wanted to go back into the game, even though his night was done after just six carries.
"He's a competitor," McCoy said. "He loves to compete. And we said that from Day 1. That's why we picked him where we did. ... But we've got a pitch count on everybody. And we want to get so much out of every player each week."
Huey shines: McCoy had more good things to say about reserve interior offensive lineman Michael Huey. The free-agent addition played 37 snaps on offense at both guard and center for the Chargers against the Cowboys. McCoy said Huey has shown steady improvement through training camp.
"He did a nice job," McCoy said. "He's done a lot since he's been here, whether it's been center or guard. He's gotten better. If you really look at the players on this team, that's one player that's really made some improvements."
