SAN DIEGO -- Now that practices are no longer open to the public, San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy returned to his coy ways in providing injury updates on players.
Cornerback Jason Verrett, inside linebacker Denzel Perryman and rookie running back Melvin Gordon were among several players who did not practice on Wednesday. When asked if any of those three had suffered an injury or were just taking a rest day, McCoy failed to provide any clarity on their health status.
“We’re going to give some guys a rest as time goes along,” McCoy said. “Some guys have little bumps and bruises as camp goes along. But it’s a long haul, a long season. And we’re taking care of guys as we go. They’re going to grind it out when it’s their time to go.
“Some days we’ll say you have to rest a little bit to get them healthy, or just to get their leg fresh.”
McCoy would not say if Gordon will play in his team’s second exhibition game against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday.
“We’ll talk about everything,” McCoy said. “And we’ll have a rotation later in the week.”
Gordon also missed a practice a little over two weeks ago, but practiced the next day and said he was fine. Gordon was not on the field for most of San Diego’s two-hour practice, but came out on the field for about the final 20 minutes.
Gordon finished with 11 yards on six carries in his first preseason action against the Cowboys last week.
According to Rand Getlin of the NFL Network, Gordon is dealing with a minor ankle injury and may not play against the Cardinals.
Along with Perryman, Verrett and Gordon, other players who did not practice for the Chargers include cornerback Chris Davis, outside linebacker Tourek Williams, guard Johnnie Troutman, safety Gordon Hill and cornerback Chris Davis.
