The San Diego Chargers announced a long list of players that will not be suiting up in the team’s second preseason game Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals.
The most surprising is Philip Rivers, who will not play. Rivers has shown no signs of injury during training camp, but apparently the Chargers want to give the 33-year-old quarterback some rest.
“We’ll get some other guys work in the second preseason game, and let him play in the third after playing in the first (preseason game) like he did,” Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said about sitting Rivers. “We made this decision a long time ago.”
Melvin Gordon, who missed a practice with a minor ankle injury, also will not play.
The Chargers might have trouble fielding depth at cornerback, with Jason Verrett, Steve Williams, Greg Ducre and Chris Davis all watching from the sideline.
Others not playing on Saturday include guard Johnnie Troutman, center Trevor Robinson, defensive tackle Corey Liuget, rookie linebacker Denzel Perryman, receiver Torrence Allen and outside linebacker Tourek Williams.
