SAN DIEGO -- Lost in the swirl of Eric Weddle news on Monday was the San Diego Chargers making several roster moves with an eye toward the 2016 season.
The Chargers placed Weddle (groin), fellow safety Darrell Stuckey (knee), tight end Ladarius Green (ankle) and nose tackle Sean Lissemore (shoulder) on the season-ending, injured reserve list.
With the open roster spots, the Chargers signed tight end Sean McGrath and safety Matt Daniels from the practice squad, and claimed tight end Asante Cleveland from waivers.
At 6-foot-5 and 259 pounds, McGrath is a solid blocker in the run game with good hands and decent speed. McGrath has spent the past five weeks on San Diego’s practice squad.
At 6-foot and 212 pounds, Daniels is in his third NFL season out of Duke, and has spent a total of three weeks on San Diego’s practice squad.
Cleveland is a 6-5, 260-pound second-year player who played college ball at the University of Miami. He spent most of 2015 on the practice squad for the New England Patriots, but was signed to their active roster on Nov. 28, playing in four games. The Patriots waived Cleveland last week.
San Diego also brought back offensive linemen Craig Watts and Michael Huey to the team’s practice squad.
With 52 players on the active roster, the Chargers still have one spot available.
