SAN DIEGO -- Drafted as the long-term answer at center for the San Diego Chargers three years ago, the team waived offensive lineman Chris Watt after a failed physical on Tuesday.
Selected in the third round of the 2014 draft out of Notre Dame, Watt began training camp and the start of the regular season on the physically unable to perform [PUP] list as he recovered from offseason knee surgery.
The Chargers had until this week to start the clock on Watt’s three-week window to see if he was healthy enough to be added to the team’s active roster.
Watt was attempting to come back from a 2015 season in which he was limited to five games and three starts due to injuries.
The Chargers signed Matt Slauson as the team’s starter this season and drafted Max Tuerk in the third round as the potential starter in the future.
Because of that and the relative health the team experienced this year at offensive line, Watt’s role with the organization moving forward remained uncertain and he needed to show the Chargers that he was healthy.
Watt, 26, played in 17 games with eight starts at guard and center over two seasons for the Chargers.
