SAN DIEGO -- In need of depth at the interior of the offensive line, San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy will have to wait a little longer to see if veteran offensive lineman Jeromey Clary can return from offseason shoulder and hip surgeries.
Clary was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list during training camp, and is eligible to begin practice this week. However, McCoy indicated that Clary is not healthy enough to return to the practice field.
Clary was seen on crutches at San Diego’s Oct. 5 contest at home against the New York Jets.
“He’s not ready to come off yet,” said McCoy, when asked about Clary’s status.
Clary has a three-week window to begin practicing before the Chargers have to make a decision on whether to place him on the active roster or leave him on the reserve-PUP list. Johnnie Troutman has made every start at right guard this season with Clary out.
McCoy did not provide injury updates on Brandon Flowers (groin) and Eddie Royal (rib), who both had to leave Sunday’s game at Oakland and did not return.
McCoy also said two points of emphasis his team has to fix after watching the film is better execution on third down defensively and creating more pressure on the quarterback.
The Chargers allowed Oakland’s offense directed by rookie Derek Carr to convert 62 percent of the team’s third downs. San Diego also finished without a sack or a quarterback hit against Carr.
