EARTH CITY, Mo. -- After much debate and internal struggle, new St. Louis Rams running back Todd Gurley finally has a jersey number.
When coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead introduced Gurley to the St. Louis media Friday, Fisher mentioned that Gurley was having trouble finding a jersey number that works for him. It was apparently a dire enough situation that the Rams even flirted with the idea (at least jokingly) of asking Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson for his No. 29.
“We’re currently trying to get in touch with Eric because we want to see if his jersey number is available because we don’t have that," Fisher said. "Do you like No. 35? How’s that? No. 41? If we put a 40 on you, you’re going to get slow. So we’re trying to find a jersey number for him.”
As it turns out, all the Rams had to do was trade running back Zac Stacy to the New York Jets for a seventh-round pick to free up a number that Gurley was willing to accept. That's right, Gurley will wear No. 30 for the Rams.
League rules prohibited Gurley from wearing No. 3, the number he wore for the Georgia Bulldogs. So 30 should work on some level because backwards it's still No. 3.
Here's the entire breakdown of the rookie jersey numbers for those keeping score at home without the benefit of a program.
RB Todd Gurley -- No. 3
OT Robert Havenstein -- No. 79 (earlier this offseason, offensive tackle Greg Robinson switched from 79 to 73).
OL Jamon Brown -- No. 68
QB Sean Mannion -- No. 14
OL Andrew Donnal -- No. 64
WR Bud Sasser -- No. 81
DE Martin Ifedi -- No. 96
LB Bryce Hager -- No. 54
OG Cody Wichmann -- No. 69
