EARTH CITY, Mo. -- The St. Louis Rams made it abundantly clear that they were ready to move on from quarterback Austin Davis during the preseason when he got, by far, the fewest repetitions among their four quarterbacks.
They made it official on Saturday when they released Davis, who started eight games for them in 2014. With quarterbacks possessing starting experience and any level of success at a premium in the NFL, Davis figured to draw attention.
After clearing waivers, Davis went to Cleveland for a physical and signed with the Browns on Monday morning.
The Rams, meanwhile, complete their total overhaul of their quarterback depth in letting Davis leave. They now have three new players on the roster in Nick Foles, Case Keenum and Sean Mannion.
Davis had his moments in St. Louis, including a comeback win against Tampa Bay and helping the Rams to a victory against Seattle. While his arm strength and deep ball accuracy is limited, he did what he could with decent athleticism and plenty of moxie. Through it all, he was a standup guy in the locker room, always willing to face the media and answer questions whether things were good or bad.
In Cleveland, Davis gets a new start in place where you just never know what could happen.
