Sam Bradford and Stefon Diggs developed instant chemistry last season. In their first game together, Diggs set a career high in yards and went on to finish 16th in the NFL in total receptions.
The chemistry has continued throughout training camp as Bradford-Diggs highlight-reel connections have been a common occurrence. The Vikings' quarterback attributes their growth to a closer personal relationship.
"Having time to spend with him during the offseason, a lot of it off the field, our lockers are by each other, just talking to him, developing that chemistry," Bradford said. "I think the better relationship you have with someone off the field, the easier it is to trust them on the field."
Diggs was the Vikings' most-targeted receiver in 2016 with 111 throws going in his direction and was among the league's best with a 75.6 percent catch percentage.
"He does a great job getting open, he does a great job beating the coverage, he's one of those guys that as a quarterback you just enjoy throwing to," Bradford said.
Many of the impressive plays between the Vikings' quarterback and top receiver have come on long balls, including a 40-yard touchdown throw during the Vikings' heavily-attended night practice in Mankato.
Last season, Diggs had seven catches on passes that traveled more than 20 yards and one came in Week 1 from backup QB Shaun Hill. Bradford said the team has put an emphasis in camp on creating more of those types of explosive plays.
To head coach Mike Zimmer, the long throws are more of a sign of Bradford's talented arm than chemistry between the players.
"Diggs runs good routes, he catches the ball good, but Bradford puts the ball on the money, in places where he can make catches," Zimmer said. "That's why if we give [Bradford] time, he's got a chance to be good."
