METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Saints are re-signing veteran tight end John Phillips to a one-year deal the team announced on Wednesday.
Phillips, 29, was a solid midseason pickup for the Saints last year, mostly as a blocker and special teamer. He appeared in eight games with five catches for 32 yards. His path to playing time should be a little more crowded now, though, with Coby Fleener as the projected starter and Josh Hill and Michael Hoomanawanui expected to be back healthy.
Phillips (6-foot-5, 251 pounds) has spent eight years in the NFL, playing with the Cowboys, Chargers, Broncos and Saints.
