EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Short on healthy defensive ends, the New York Giants re-signed Devin Taylor on the Tuesday after their bye week.
Taylor was cut prior to the start of the season after being signed as a free agent this summer. He had 11.5 sacks the previous two seasons with the Detroit Lions, and the thought was that he could add depth to the line. But Taylor didn't survive a numbers game with youngsters Romeo Okwara and Avery Moss on the roster and veteran Kerry Wynn outplaying him this summer.
The Giants placed linebacker/defensive end Cap Capi on injured reserve to make room for Taylor on the roster. Capi suffered a hamstring injury in the Giants’ loss to Seattle last week.
He’s the latest in a line of injured Giants. Defensive end Olivier Vernon (ankle) has missed the last three games, the first time in his career he has missed time. Okwara (knee) was recently placed in injured reserve and Wynn (knee) was nicked against the Seahawks.
Moss was already playing an expanded role with all the injuries. Taylor now joins the group heading into this week’s game against the Los Angeles Rams at MetLife Stadium.
The veteran (6-foot-7, 270) provides the Giants with some length and experience. He had five tackles and an interception this preseason. He has 15 career sacks in five professional seasons.
Capi was serving as a special teams contributor in recent weeks. He was originally signed to the practice squad prior to the start of the season.
Capi appeared in four games after being elevated to the active roster on Sept. 28.
The Giants also signed linebacker Trevor Bates to the practice squad Tuesday and released wide receiver Kalif Raymond.
