Sunday morning's wake-up call, Day 25 of New York Jets training camp:
What's happening: The Jets will shake up their camp routine, crossing two bridges to practice on Long Island -- specifically, Hofstra University. Their annual "Family Night" practice begins at 7 p.m. (the gates open at 5:30). The 30-and-over crowd will recall that Hofstra was the Jets' year-round home for four decades, a run that ended in 2008, when they moved to Florham Park, New Jersey. Returning to Hofstra once a year is an olive branch to their Long Island fan base.
What's hot: The focus will be on the health of the team, specifically, three players -- Muhammad Wilkerson (hamstring), Jeremy Kerley (concussion) and Matt Flynn (hamstring). Kerley, injured in Friday night's game, probably will be sidelined at least a few days. Wilkerson has missed three weeks, and the calendar is starting to become an issue. If he doesn't play Saturday against the New York Giants, it means he'll miss the entire preseason. As you know, the starters don't play in the final game. The Jets said Flynn, signed last Wednesday, would need about a week before he can start practicing. ... We'll also be looking for safety Calvin Pryor, who was excused for a week because of a death in his family. He missed several days of practice and didn't play Friday night. His absence has allowed Jaiquawn Jarrett and Rontez Miles to get extra work, which is a good thing. But now there's a depth concern. Without Pryor, they have only three healthy safeties, as rookie Durell Eskridge (concussion) was hurt in the game. They had to move cornerback Javier Arenas to safety. ... How will Todd Bowles handle the penalty problem? He was irked by the 17 penalties this past Friday night. Time to bring back the penalty push-ups?
