SAN DIEGO -- A few thoughts on the San Diego Chargers' 31-28 win Sunday over the Oakland Raiders in this Week 6 contest at O.co Coliseum.
What it means: Down 28-24, Chargers running back Branden Oliver dove over the goal line from a yard out for the winning score with 1:56 left in the game. Oliver finished with 101 rushing yards, the second straight week he rushed for over 100 yards. With a fifth straight victory the Chargers have their longest winning streak since 2009, when they totaled 11 straight. Dating to last season, the Chargers have won nine of their past 10 regular-season games. According to ESPN Stats & Info, since the start of last season the Raiders are 0-17 when tied or trailing after three quarters.
Verrett's first INT: Rookie cornerback Jason Verrett ended the game for the Chargers, intercepting a Derek Carr pass on Oakland's final drive to seal the win. It was Verrett's first career interception, and it came against the team the Fairfield, California, native grew up rooting for, the Raiders. Verrett also led the Chargers with six tackles.
Where's the pressure? The Chargers were tied for seventh in sacks with 12 heading into Sunday's contest against the Raiders. However, San Diego failed to get any pressure on Carr and finished without a sack. The Fresno State product used the time in the pocket to his advantage, dialing up big plays to Andre Holmes (77 yards) and Brice Butler (47) for long touchdowns. Carr finished with 282 passing yards and four touchdowns.
Stock watch: Philip Rivers threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns, finishing with multiple passing touchdowns in a contest for a fifth straight game, a career record. Rivers also threw a touchdown in a team-record 26th straight game.
Curious fake punt call: The Chargers started the second half well, taking the opening drive of the final half and marching to Oakland's 16-yard line. However, three offensive penalties, including a holding call by tight end Ladarius Green on Nick Novak's 54-yard made field goal, left San Diego without any points to show for its effort. Making matters worse, Eric Weddle tried a fake punt on fourth-and-35 from Oakland's 46-yard line, with the pass thrown out of bounds to gunner Seyi Ajirotutu. The Raiders took advantage of the good field position. Butler scored three plays later on a 47-yard reception to give Oakland a 21-14 lead.
Game ball: Receiver Malcom Floyd had a big day, finishing with five catches for 103 yards, including a 5-yard reception for a score. Floyd made several big catches down the field that kept the chains moving for a San Diego offense that struggled to find a rhythm at times against the Raiders.
What's next: The Chargers return home to host another AFC West rival, the Kansas City Chiefs, at 4:05 p.m. ET Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium.
