GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Overheard and seen in the Washington Redskins' locker room after their 30-20 loss to the Arizona Cardinals:
Redskins coach Jay Gruden appeared as exasperated as he's been after any loss this season. There was a deep sigh at the podium, and he wore the face of a man who had just been punched in the gut. After his news conference, Gruden walked around to a number of players, checking on them and shaking their hands. "You all right, man?" he asked running back Alfred Morris, after slapping him on the shoulder. He told players they had played well. But he was realistic in his news conference. "We were close many times ... but close isn't getting it done."
The locker room was different than after Monday night's defeat to Seattle. Then, the Redskins had an upbeat atmosphere. Sunday, that was far from the case. Very little conversation could be heard and, certainly, no joking around. "Losing sucks,” Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo said. This looked like a team that had lost a fourth straight game and can't figure out how to escape the losing.
Left tackle Trent Williams limped along in the locker room. He irritated his kneecap while chasing corner Rashad Johnson on his 28-yard interception return for a touchdown. Williams said he would not need more tests on it and just said he landed a "little awkward on it.”
